You know the old saying, “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade!”
Thousands of kids took that advice Saturday, May 5th, when they participated in National Lemonade Day. This annual event encourages kids from all ages to tap into their entrepreneurial and financial literacy skills by running their own lemonade stand. This mission began in 2017 in Houston, Texas and has grown to reach over a million mini-moguls in the making. Local 7 year old, Jay Miles Dombroski, decided to take on this challenge and set up his lemonade booth at The Victory Cup Kentucky Derby Polo Match held in Manor, Texas last Saturday. As one of the vendors, Jay Miles, Lémonmon Lemonade, had the ultimate exposure to sell his product. “I wanted to set up my lemonade stand in a place that has a lot of people. We like to watch the Kentucky Derby and thought the Victory Cup was the perfect place,” explained Jay. A part of registration for Lemonade Day, each child receives access to lessons that include creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Jay used those tools to budget and make real business decisions to run a successful lemonade stand. Jay walked away with $50.27 after all expenses and a donation to Austin Pets Alive. With the help of Lemonade Day, Jay is on his way to becoming a forward-thinking citizen…one lemonade stand at a time!
